How Wedding Toasts Are Actually Cut
Speeches are the least ordered edit we make and the most rewatched thing we deliver. Couples come back to the toasts long after they have stopped rewatching the film, because that is where the people who were there are still saying things.
The sound is the content. A speech recorded on three microphones at three distances is three different volumes of the same joke, and only one of those volumes gets the laugh. Levelling across every source that was running — and matching them so that cutting the picture does not jump the sound — is most of the work in this edit. Reception rooms add clipping when the speaker leans in, handling noise when the microphone is passed down the table, and a PA feeding back into the camera track.
The picture work is mostly about reactions: the best frame during a speech is frequently not the speaker, and the person delivering it never sees it. Where a speech runs long we will ask before cutting, because a speech that overran is a different problem from one that went wrong, and only you know which one you are holding.
