How we edit videos in languages we don’t speak

Since 2022, we began to receive more requests for interesting wedding edits. What is so unusual about them? The couples who booked the weddings did not speak English. If a videographer from the USA, UK, or Australia knows the language the newlyweds speak, then it is easy for them to shoot that wedding. But what do they do if they cannot? Who can edit it in different languages?

The Bride&Groom.video team implemented a process of multilingual wedding video editing with a  plugin from Adobe called Speech to Text. With this plugin, we can work with many languages, including  Hindi and Mandarin.

Why Speech to Text?

When we did our first projects in foreign languages, it was very important to us to get feedback from our clients and couples who are native speakers. We were incredibly happy when we read such phrases as:

Speech to Text became the best practice for us. This is a speech recognition plugin that can automatically create text transcription, video translations, and custom captions for video content in the target language. Numerous beta tests have shown that it is exceptionally accurate, unlike other similar services.

With this useful plugin, we can:

1. Make speech transcription

In just a few minutes, Speech to Text can transcribe the person’s speech in the language we need and show us the ready result. We can add our captions to the timeline, and using Adobe’s AI capability, it becomes possible to match the dialogue voices’ tempo.  

2. Create subtitles

If the client desires, we can make subtitles in the language of the wedding for all speeches or to highlight significant words and moments. Moreover, we can add subtitles in English. The plugin will automatically translate the speaker’s language into English and create subtitles.

3. Design captions

Using the design tools in the Essential Graphics panel, we can style captions and add them to videos. We can create multiple versions of captions in the same workflow, including for social media (Instagram, Twitter, etc.), and use style templates.

FAQs

What if our wedding’s language isn’t on the supported list? 

Ask the editing team before booking rather than assuming it’s a dealbreaker. Language support has grown steadily with software updates, and the current list already spans European and Asian languages from Spanish and German to Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, and Japanese. For a language outside the list, the team can tell you upfront what’s workable for that specific project.

How can an editor cut speeches in a language they don’t speak?

Transcription closes the gap. Speech recognition converts the speeches into text the editor can read and translate, so they know exactly what’s said and when, and can place the most meaningful lines where they belong in the wedding film. Native-speaking couples reviewing early multilingual projects described the results as natural and true to life, which is the real test.

Should our subtitles be in the original language or English? 

You don’t have to pick one. Subtitles can run in the wedding’s own language for family and guests, in auto-translated English for a wider audience, or both as separate versions of the film. Captions can also be styled and formatted for social platforms, so the version grandparents watch and the version posted to Instagram each get the right treatment.

Will automatic transcription get names and personal vows right? 

Automatic transcription can handle vows and speeches well, but proper names can still be a weak spot, especially unusual names or place names. The simple fix is sending the couple’s names, family names, and any unusual place names with correct spellings along with the footage. That gives the editor a cleaner transcript to work from and helps catch small caption errors before delivery.
